Guide to the Dorian City of Lato, Crete, Greece

The Altar

Close to Lato's Great Temple, just a few metres to its East, is an altar. Its purpose is indeterminate but could have been related to sacrificial offerings or burning, hence explaining its position a little away from the temple itself rather than being located inside. This type of offering to the air is not uncommon and can be seen in similar structures near to a number of other contemporary religious buildings.
