The Main Gate marks the entrance to the fortified city and leads into the remains of two successive chambers or courtyards, each originally having an additional gate, which would in turn provide even greater control over security and access to Lato. The gate is approached on a narrow path which gradually rises up the contours of the hill. The hillside to the west of the gate drops away sharply, making attack on the outer wall of the courtyards all but impossible. Archaeological excavations suggest the remains of what may be one or more towers adjacent to the Main Gate and courtyards. See structures A and B.
