Guide to the Dorian City of Lato, Crete, Greece

'Rustic Theatre'

To the East of the Great Temple, on the lower terrace, there are the ruins of another set of steps and alongside these an Exedra type structure, larger than the one to the South of the Agora. The steps themselves are partially carved into the rock and partly built of stone, although the remains are far from complete. The Exedra, however, is substantially intact and its shape and bench easily identifiable. It is thought that taken along with the platform in front, which is edged by the lower terrace's supporting wall, this could have formed a type of theatre, although it could also be posited that it is merely just another outdoor meeting place. Conjecture can only surround its true use, whether the complex was for civic entertainment, communal or religious assembly.
