Water, or the shortage of it, was a continuous issue for Lato and it is widely suggested that this is one of the reasons why the city was ultimately abandoned. Not only is there the huge cistern in the centr of the Agora but many more smaller holes in the ground that suggest the remains of further domestic water trapping and storage abound at the site. Many of the dwellings have evidence of them and there are further ones out in the open where no building would appear to have exercised exclusive rights.
